Full Statement by Director Sonoda regarding Melbourne Screening Cancellation
(Translated in English)

OSAKA – June 30, 2026 –
Today, June 30th, marks six years since the enactment of the National Security Law, under which the freedom of Hong Kong continues to be stripped away. In light of this situation, we, the LOVE SUPREME Screening Committee, planned simultaneous premiere previews in three cities worldwide (Osaka, Paris, and Melbourne). We hoped to preview this unreleased film to give courage to those whose freedoms are being denied.
However, this morning, the Victoria Hong Kongers group informed us that one of those screenings—in Melbourne, Australia—was forced to be cancelled after local police claimed there were safety security concerns.
In fact, during the world premiere of LOVE SUPREME in Canada, we faced legal demands, and our freedom of expression was severely compromised by disruptors shouting slogans and committing acts of violence during the screening. Nevertheless, we pushed through to the end and managed to deeply move many in the audience.
This time, however, it is an outright cancellation—they refused to even allow the screening to take place. This is an outrageous act by the local police. If there is involvement from a specific country behind this decision, it can only be described as a barbaric challenge to our free world. I strongly protest this action and resolutely oppose any act that suppresses freedom of expression. Shame on them!
Fundamentally, my new film LOVE SUPREME is like a love letter to Xi Jinping. If you watch it, you will see how sincerely it confronts the life of this individual. Human beings are capable of repentance. I want Xi Jinping to watch this film and realize how his ongoing suppression of ethnic minorities, religious persecution, forced organ harvesting, coercive diplomacy, and challenges to freedom are distorting the hearts of humanity and degrading civilization. I want him to confront the "fear" that dominates his own heart. It was with these thoughts that I narrated this work. I sincerely ask people to watch it before criticizing it, and to look into their own hearts.
As of 2026, we as humanity suffer from the same sickness of the heart as Xi Jinping. If our hearts change, our countries and the world will change—this is the ultimate truth of the universe. For decades, we have neglected our hearts far too much. It would not be an exaggeration to say that humanity has lived its life driven entirely by "fear." I truly hope this film serves as a catalyst for people to realize this critical truth.
